Polished Concrete

Why Polished Concrete?

Polished concrete offers an interesting alternative to traditional flooring. It combines the classic strengths of concrete: durability and affordability. The polished finish adds a touch of modern elegance, with a variety of colors and sheens to match your style.

While some imperfections may become exposed, they can add a unique, natural character to your space, making polished concrete a top choice for both homes and businesses.

The benefits go beyond beauty: Polished Concrete boasts superior performance, without requiring regular waxing or re-coatings to keep it looking it's best for years to come which makes it a smart long-term investment. No wonder we like to call it "The long-term flooring champion".

Polished Concrete Benefits

Here's why polished concrete stands out as the smart choice for your floors:

Colorful and Customizable: Ditch the boring gray! Integrate dyes while polishing to create a decorative, personalized floor.

Unmatched Strength: Hardening treatments during the process boost the concrete's resilience, making it highly scratch-resistant.

Cost-Effective: While the initial cost might be higher than some options, its long lifespan and low maintenance requirements make it a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Ready When You Are: Unlike other flooring options, there's no waiting! Polished concrete floors are usable immediately after the job is done.

Eco-Friendly Choice: Polished concrete is LEED-compliant and VOC-free, making it a responsible choice for the environment. Brownie Points for that!

Finish Options & Colors

Cream Polish

Aimed at the residential sector. An attractive, characteristic style with no the initial surface grinding. Achievable with either a new concrete floor or an existing floor that has a surface in excellent condition. Requires a high standard, power trowel finish to achieve this option.

Salt & Pepper

Offered where functionality is a priority. The process involves initially lightly grinding the concrete surface before mechanically polishing it. The amount of fine sands and aggregates visible will depend on the extent of the grind needed to prepare the surface for concrete polishing.

Random Exposure

Random exposure creates a unique textured look for concrete floors.

It's achieved by grinding down the surface to reveal patches of the aggregate (pebbles) mixed into the concrete. This results in a random mix of exposed stones and smooth concrete, for a look that can be industrial and modern in style.

Heavy Aggregate

Created by a heavy initial grind of the concrete to expose the aggregate. Multiple grinding & mechanical concrete polishing stages are then required to finish the process. This option has the most amount of refinement stages to the concrete surface to offer a high quality and extremely durable floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

DOES POLISH CONCRETE HAVE A SLIPPERY SURFACE?

No, even when it has a glossy finish. Concrete actually provides a good level of foot traction and actually fares better than some other flooring choices such as lino or marble. Our sealers also provide a considerable amount of slip resistance to concrete floors. However, it is important to exercise caution when they are wet, just like with any other type of flooring material.

CAN YOU HAVE IN FLOOR HEATING WITH POLISHED CONCRETE?

Absolutely. Concrete is incredibly thermogenic and works really well when used with water fed underfloor heating systems. We recommend laying the concrete to a minimum depth of 4" over the heating pipes, and we will provide you with special instructions for using your heating for the first time.

DO POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS SCRATCH EASILY?

Thereโ€™s no doubt that concrete floors are very strong, but the general perception that they are impervious to any damage often leaves them at risk of misuse. Although concrete floors are resistant to scratching, they are still susceptible to damage, especially from grit or pebbles that get trapped in shoes. To avoid this, we recommend the use of boundary mats to remove grit from shoes on entering a room. Dragging heavy furniture across concrete can also cause scratches. It has to be said, however, that with regular and considerate use, polished concrete flooring is one of the most durable flooring systems around today.

IS POLISHED CONCRETE EXPENSIVE?

Polished concrete is affordable to many and comparable in costs to other flooring options such a quality porcelain tiles. The costs vary depending on the condition of the concrete to be worked on, the size of the project and the number of rooms included in the total area, how much diamond grinding is required and the geographical area that the works are due to take place as we do not lay concrete slabs you will need to factor in the concrete cost and add to our quotation for a total job price. We will always quote each job separately and are confident youโ€™ll not find a fairer quote elsewhere.
